July 12, 2019— Jim Masterson is the creator of The Masterson Method®, a system of equine bodywork in which the practitioner and horse work together to release tension in the key junctions of the body that impact performance. He is the author of the “Beyond Horse Massage," Amazon’s No. 1 seller in its category and ”The Dressage Horse Optimized,” both published by Trafalgar Square. He is also the producer of many Masterson Method instructional videos.

More than 5,000 people have taken The Masterson Method Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar, the introductory course. Hundreds of certified practitioners around the world use The Masterson Method to help all types of horses, from pleasure mounts to elite performance athletes.

Jim first became interested in equine massage in 1997. He observed that horses guard against showing signs of pain, weakness or lameness, making it challenging to identify the cause of their discomfort. He also noticed that the horse exhibits certain neurological responses to touch as tension releases from their body. Using his experience and observations of the horse, he created The Masterson Method.

Jim describes his method as something a practitioner does with the horse rather than to the horse. Without the horse’s participation, it doesn’t work.

The Masterson Method is a technique that anyone can use to increase performance and also attain new levels of communication and trust with the horse.

In 2008, Jim created The Masterson Method Equine Performance Bodywork Certification Program in both the U.S. and the U.K., then added programs in Australia and New Zealand. In 2012, he developed the online Field Work School site, where students can find resources, communicate with mentors and monitor their progress.

Jim worked as the official equine bodyworker for the USET Endurance teams from 2006-2014 and has worked on horses in various disciplines competing in the FEI World Cup, Nation’s Cup, Pan Am Games and World Equestrian Games. He is a frequent presenter at Equitana Asia Pacific, Equine Affaire in the U.S., Your Horse Live in the U.K. and at various equine fairs and expos.
